Biography
Kyung was born in South Korea and she moved to Canada in 2000. She received her BAA from Sheridan ITAL in 2007.
In work that is both calming and searching Kyung Soon Park portrays idealized figures in various abstract landscapes to explore concepts of memory, identity and emotions in a surreal setting. Park demonstrates her fondness of nature in her work and invites viewers to share her colorful appreciation of the peace she finds here.
Artist Statement
My life’s journey is the source of my creativity. I have always to relate my art to my experiences. Often, it has not been easy to see the correlation, but it has been made my art becomes imbued with unique way I have come to view the world.
I find inspiration in the way that every person is unique. I try to show that uniqueness when I set out to create a piece. I also place a great deal of value in the differences of the culture that I grew up and the culture that I am a part of now. The contrast between them allows me to take a step back and perceive the subject hand from multiple perspectives.After leaving one life to begin another, I have found solace in the memories that I carry with me. When I visit my old home, nothing is as I remember it, so my memories have become even more alive to me. Even before I began to pursue my artistic abilities my life has always been creative. I try to draw my experiences and learn from them as well. It may be odd to place so much value on something that is so intangible but my memories and experiences continue to shape the way I see, understand and interact with people.
I enjoy taking scenes from my past and using them as agate way to show people how I see the world and how I came from a different background. I am a guide that takes people on a tour of my world; a world that is similar to the place they know but just different enough to make them re-examine what is familiar to them.
